I have vivid memories of riding the bus from a young age and right through my high school years.
The driver would open the door beside the drivers seat and climb out to open a latch above the window. They would then wind the destination scroll to the correct name and number for the next destination.
Another bygone era that has given way to the digital generation with the now computerised bus signs.
