A little something from Suzanne Vega. There are varying interpretations of her lyrics here but the one I relate to most, given my emotional status in this current time with the state of the world, is this:
The song “Small Blue Thing” by Suzanne Vega is about the experience of being small and fragile in a large and overwhelming world. It speaks to the feeling of insignificance and powerlessness when confronted with a difficult situation, which can be internal or external. The song speaks to the idea of breaking down and being scattered like light, and of feeling accepted and protected in spite of it all. The imagery of the characters as a “small blue thing” is a powerful metaphor for the experience of feeling vulnerable, powerless, and exposed to the world.
No matter how much the world shouts and protests it is hard not to feel powerless.
